I really need to start listening to this again (I barely got started), but Beyond Belief was easily my favorite segment. I'm not a huge fan of some of the segments, but this one is hilarious and entertaining. I get why you might feel a bit guilty about it (sometimes I feel the same), but it doesn't make you a bad person.

Beyond Belief is parodying a very specific '30s and '40s trope that involved the detectives having cocktails ALL THE TIME. Nick and Nora Charles (how did they even stand up?), Lord Peter Wimsey and Harriet Vane, etc. So I wouldn't beat yourself up about it - the drinking is a key element of those detective couples.

Yes, this, and I love the Thin Man series and I love Nick and Nora and I think Sadie and Frank are utterly capturing the spirit (HA! Spirit!) of those films - at least as comedy, of course. i think it's just wonderful. Just don't overthink it, OP - these aren't and are not supposed to represent real people. They're representing a particular archetype of the past - they are the alcoholic's idea of how clever and witty alcoholics are, only realised for sober people, and thus, actually so. It's as unlikely in real life as unicorns, but it's so much fun to play with in fiction.

My uncle was an alcoholic, so I understand your kind of guilty feeling because Beyond Belief is my favourite segment as well (together with Captain Laserbeam). But as the other anon said: It's a parody.
