An analogy

It occurred to me that you could compare media piracy to having an affair with a married person.

So in this analogy who is the married person? There are three people involved in that scenario and I'm having trouble placing all the roles.

What they have in common is that both are not actually depriving the, uh, rightful possessor of their object or spouse. The pirate is the single person, becoming intimate with the intellectual property which is supposed to be the sole domain of its creator.

Yeah, it's kinda weak.

But the intellectual property doesn't have any agency while a married person cheating on their spouse has to take at least half of the blame.

You could also compare hamsters to potato salad.

They're both necessities at picnics?

Both are better cooked.

What?

Re: An analogy

(Anonymous) 2014-08-23 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
But is it a good analogy?

Re: An analogy

(Anonymous) 2014-08-23 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe not, but perhaps it wasn't a good marriage, either.

Re: An analogy

(Anonymous) 2014-08-23 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I think you could better compare it to making a quick photocopy of a document which you wouldn't pay for but might read if someone shoved a free version in front of you.

And you could compare a glass of water to a toaster oven while you're at it.

My views on piracy are probably more conservative than the general consensus, but... no, I wouldn't say that.

No. Not even remotely the same.

Why? Because you're doing it behind someone's back?

Re: An analogy

If the affair consisted of finding the anatomically correct private part of a 3-D printed copy of the married person, then yes.

Otherwise, no. You're not stealing the original. You're stealing a copy. That just happens to function much like the original.

It occurs to me that you could compare balancing a checkbook to becoming a professional window-washer.
