Not really an unpopular opinion, but am I the only liberal who loves country music?

Not the only one, I like it too, and there are definitely others who do also.

It's definitely less common though.

Nope! But I prefer older stuff (like Johnny Cash) and alt-country (like The Handsome Family.)

You're definitely not alone.

I don't, but my liberal parents do.

I like it...

I wouldn't say I "love" country music, but it has a place in my playlist for the following reasons:

1. Emotionality. It's not always true, but country songs often have a better treatment of love and romance than other genres.

2. History. If you like music and you don't recognize the incredible contributions of artists like Johnny Cash and Hank Williams, you don't know shit about music son.

3. Fun. I like to dance. Country can be pretty good to line dance to. Ergo, I like country that I can dance to.

Nope I like all kinds of music. It depends more on the song itself (mostly the tune) than the genre, or even what language it's in to me.

You are far from the only one.

I love bluegrass and alt country and old country like Cash and Nelson, and I have unrepentant nostalgia for late 80s, early 90s country. I like a lot of the newer country that's really pop.

Count me in as well, especially Johnny, Waylon and Willie and their generation. But I do like some of the poppy new country as well. And I'm counting Kris Kristofferson and John Prine, too.

Not the only one, and in fact I like it enough to posit something specific: country music sold out when it stopped making crooks and ex-cons the heroes in its songs.

Time was, doing a song or two about doing some time was de rigeur if you wanted to wear a cowboy hat and strum a guitar. The greatest country song ever written ("Pancho and Lefty", obviously) is about two outlaws. But when country music started being on the side of The Man, it lost its soul. Nowadays the only country you'll hear on the radio is soulless corporate crap. The alt-country scene is still alive, but "mainstream" country sold out to The Man.
