Re: What is the sign of someone being rich to you?

"Rich" always seems to be this sliding scale that many people aspire to, but no matter how high you climb, the answer is always "No, I'm not rich" because there's always somebody richer than you.

And what's "rich" will also be driven somewhat by the community standards where you live.

But I think the term "upper middle class" is stretched to the breaking point by many a rich person.

Rich is pretty circumstantial, too. I mean, you can buy a big house probably means well off, but I think the key is, is it easy for you to make that purchase. If you've been saving and budgeting and skipped out on other things to be able to afford the big house, you're probably not rich. If the big house wasn't a financial strain, then you might be. I think upper-middle class is not rich, but upper-class is. Granted, lots of upper class people may call themselves upper-middle class, but after all, most people are not rich.

AYRT. A lot of it does come down to perception, but this "Granted, lots of upper class people may call themselves upper-middle class" is what I've seen a lot of: People who are "rich" at least by the standards of the community they live in who will call themselves "upper middle class" but who balk at the terms "upper class" or "rich".

It's interesting, because I think there are more people who would say "I'm beautiful" than would say "I'm rich", but both are privileged positions.
