We don't know if there was something behind the curtains which made her act this way. This is a trait of living multi dimension characters - sometimes they act strangely as real people do. I'm not sure if that's the case with this book or it's just a lazy writing.

Likely it's lazy writing, because I was pretty disappointed with a lot of aspects of the book, especially the ending.

All of Rowells books start off decent and kamikaze to an crap ending. I never get the hype behind her because she's incapable of keeping her shit together in the end.
