Not in the endless horde they're shown as. Unless the "virus" is magical and slows down the decaying process, logically corpses would bloat and explode, especially in hot climates, and then there's the whole, you know, rigor mortis thing that occurs shortly after death. The hordes would cease to exist pretty quickly. At that point the only thing they'd need to worry about is freshly dead people.

Hence the large need for suspension of disbelief to enjoy this series. The way zombies function doesn't make a tiny ounce of sense. (Especially their smell-to-determine-if-zombie-or-not. Humans don't have a sense of smell good enough to be able to figure that out. Why would a corpse?)
