as in there's hardly any setup about the nova/kree conflict,

I thought it was "I want to destroy this certain planet because they did shit and I feel like it" yeah it was pretty bad there.

Yeah, the Kree race was one of those things that was based on a bunch of stuff from the comics that the movies had never really explained.

You know, apart from the HYDRA, I'm really finding the MCU villians rather underwhelming.

True, but I don't really mind that much, because it leaves more time for character development of the heroes and their relationships with one another. It feels more like a story about the heroes making friends and becoming heroes that happens to also involve a supervillain, rather than a hero-villain conflict. There's scads of superhero movies about the latter already in existence, but not very many about the former.

But still, yeah, they could do a better job of making the villains interesting.

Yeah, the development of the characters and their relationships with each other are stellar, I agree, it's just really frustrating when the villians are one-dimensional. Why should I care about Ronan at all?

I know that the villains in Avengers/GOTG/Thor 2/presumably TWS at least had something to do with the Infinity Stones, but did any of the Iron Man movies?

The Iron Man villians seemed to be more about Tony's (and Howard's, concerning Whiplash) past mistakes as a weapons dealer than any contribution to the infinity stone arc. Except for Trevor.

I always disliked the Kree, even in the comics:
