Most people using this term now are much, much shittier than the people they're criticizing and I don't say that lightly.

It used to refer to a certain sort of person on tumblr (say, calloutstuck), but now it's applied to every single person online who care about any sort of social issue unimportant to basement dorks
Hell, it's gotten to the point where the basement dorks are accusing 4chan's /co/ of being SJWs. That's right, they're so offended about people being less weird about those who aren't white heterosexual dudes that they're accusing a fucking 4CHAN IMAGE BOARD of being sjws
I don't use it anymore, except infrequently when I'm referring to exactly that sort of tumblr person, because again it's turned into a dogwhistle. I don't want to encourage this shit.
