I'm following someone who's very tumblr famous in her genre of blog. I actually like the specific niche of content she provides and she's the only one of that blogtype I follow.
BUT she's incredibly obnoxious. I think being tumblr famous kinda got into her head, because she reacts to the most reasonable of criticisms (for example her theme being completely unreadable being a very light gray font on a white background) with a smug "whatever loser" attitude and promptly has ten of her followers telling her to "just ignore the hater" and kissing her ass for being so awesome.
I've compromised by blacklisting her replies to messages but some of that stuff still creeps through and it's gotten to the point where I roll my eyes at everything that's not a photo post. Yet I can't convince myself to just click unfollow already...

How do you decide if you should unfollow someone?

If they start getting on my nerves, I unfollow them. If I'm rolling my eyes at practically every post, I unfollow them. I've unfollowed people I used to chat with because they got annoying.

If I don't like their blog content or if I don't like the blogger as a person. (ex good artists with shitty personalities or beliefs.)

My rule of thumb is to unfollow after three posts that annoy me.

If I don't like what you're saying after a point, goodbye.

That would drive me nuts. :( I'm in a similar situation where I follow this landscape blog for the pretty pictures, but the person won't quit posting dumb asks from their friends (conversations that should be private because they're all in jokes or fake flirting) and indulging in tumblr drama where they complain about tag editors and other boring stuff.

In your place I would just unfollow, but then again I don't have blacklist so that would make it harder to ignore that kind of thing. If someone posts or says things that annoy you, unfollow them. (Maybe that is easier said than done though, especially if they post content that you like and can't find elsewhere, but generally...it's probably best to unfollow if they're irritating you for whatever reason. Tumblr should be fun, not frustrating.)

If enough of their posts annoy me after a time, I will unfollow. I'll blacklist first if I can.

I'd unfollow. Imagine you were one if her well meaning anons and the only response she gives you is something rude and insulting? It'd really suck. On that note; fuck her. If she has people kissing her ass everytime she gets her bitch on, then she's only going to get worse.

I unfollow on a whim. I have a "3 strikes you're out" rule.

Life's too short to follow annoying people. Just go back to their tumblr occasionally and skim, if you like their art or whatever.

For me, if it gets to the point where a lot of their posts just plain annoy me, it's time to hit that unfollow button.

xkit has a mute extension that allows you to mute specific types of posts from a blog. i've used it to mute out everything but photosets for a bunch of photography blogs that i couldn't stand the personalities of.
