Calling someone names can definitely be abuse.

Over a long time, the victim comes to believe they're worthless. Also, the abuser usually cuts their victim off from their friends and family, bullies them into not leaving the house without them, and tells them that no one else would have them.

Unfortunately, those who were past victims of abuse tend to be drawn to what they already know, ie again seek out abusers. It can be baffling to those outside. It's still abuse.
