I think the way her character was written deserves genuine criticism, she does have a few mary sue traits as op says(eg take the whole Lancelot thing- she doesn't even really cheat on Arthur; its because of a spell). For me personally my main criticism with her was in relation to the Arthur relationship, I just thought the whole thing was handled so poorly, I was genuinely intrigued to see how they'd handle it when I first started watching the show but they seemed to use "time jump" as an explanation for their sudden interest in each other. Granted thats also a general criticism I had of the show anyway, time jumps were just an excuse for lazy writing. Also I just thought her and Lancelot made the most sense (and Angel and Santiago had more romantic chemistry than Angel and Bradley).
I missed Gwen from season 1 though, she was one of my favourite characters in the beginning and I felt the way she was written after that kinda went down hill, there were moments where I admired her badassery but overall I liked s1 Gwen the best and ended the series disliking her.

My beef was that Merlin and Arthur were just as badly written, yet mysteriously didn't get HALF the flack for it that Gwen did.

It's unlikely you'll see this a couple of days after you posted, but I wholeheartedly agree with this. The think that's great about the original Guinevere is that she is inherently a flawed character and that she has intent and free will in her romance with Lancelot.

The problem is that the show simply didn't set up for Lancelot/Guinevere. Are we really meant to believe that Gwen would be stupid enough to make out with a man that she barely interacted with on the eve of her marriage to Arthur? The writers wrote themselves into a corner. It HAD to be a spell, as the alternative was character assassination.
