Oh, it's totally true! Drinking water is great and exercise is also great, whether you want to lose weight or not. But I do see both things getting promoted explicitly as part of "anti-obesity" campaigns instead of as things that are good for everyone. That makes life a little harder for people like me, and probably many others as well. I think that's something health campaigners should take into consideration.

There's a big difference to me between "Soda causes dehydration; drink more water to feel better throughout the day!" and "Drinking water instead of soda helps prevent obesity!" One sounds like good general advice that isn't singling anyone out, and the other, no matter how nice you try to say it, is always going to sound to me like, "Your body is defective; get it out of my face. Also, now that you know how to stop being defective, there's no excuse."

I don't mean this as an argument, just a partial explanation. I'm already pro-water. I just also feel like I get where your angry soda friend is coming from.

No worries! It's really easy to not see how something could be hurtful if it doesn't affect you personally. And water really is great! Thanks for being nice about it. :)
