I think the gaming fandom as a whole has gotten worse in the past fifteen years.

SO much worse.

I feel like you could replace gaming with any other fandom name and you would still be right, because the internet happened.

Yeah, this.

I agree.

I also think that old-school gamers of any stripe (but especially PC gamers) tend to be the worst of them all.

Worse for whom? Worse for the neckbeards, yes. Significantly better from women gamers, tho.

Not in my case.

Ok, I know what you mean, and I don't mean to say sexism is over. There's obviously a long way to go in the battle with the unshaven smelly ones, but I do mean to say that it has gotten better on average. women gamer numbers are skyrocketing, and sexist shit by the media itself is on the very slow decline. Case in point, look at Lara Crofts new tits. The last three final fantasy games had female protagonist. Mass effect has gay men for female centred fanservice, and a positive fully rounded female character.
If neckbeard tears really did sustain me, I'd be fucking immortal by now.

That said, I am sorry that you're personally still suffering, but it IS getting very slowly better

OMG It's been a while since I laughed so hard. XD

(You deserve the internet, dear person.)

I haven't heard any guys really complain about those specific things though, at least to the point that it still a thing in the present for most of these things.

There was a big flap over gay romance in Dragon Age II, though.

Eh, it's either-or and largely dependent on where you go. All the neckbeard bullshit we're seeing now that seems so amplified? It's always been there, it's just bubbling to the surface as demographics change and the industry actually notices the change.

This, all the game sites I've gone to may have had some neckbeardy issues, but for the most part it's has not been quite as predominant as AYRT seems to say it is, for me at least.

It's just gotten bigger. Which means there's more assholes and elitists per capita, so it feels worse.

I find that there is much more love for video games from fandom. And it's not all thought of as creepy or pathetic. Lots of interesting fanart and artistic expression. And more openness of discussion overall, whereas before I barely knew anyone that knew about Final Fantasy let alone wanted to talk about it with me. Not to mention there's way more exposure, so people who don't play video games a lot still know about some things and have most likely played something at some point in their lives.

And although it doesn't seem like it on the whole, I do feel more welcomed in the community as a woman. At least IRL. Mostly because for every group of guys I talk to, there's a couple women there too. Online is a different beast because of the voices of the naysayers are louder. Although, even in online games since starting about 10 years ago I don't get nearly as much harassment. Granted, that's just my personal observation and it could just be that I've gotten better at avoiding getting into those situations.
