Wait, what?

Has it ever happened, when you've watched foreign media, that it has mentioned/referenced popular culture from your own country, which has not spread outside the borders or at least is way too obscure for the main audience of the former? What was it and what reaction did you have?

The recent revival of "Hooked on a feeling" made me think of that one time I watched "Raising Cain" and suddenly the old "Bamse" comic was mentioned as having been a somewhat important part of Carter's childhood. ( http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bamse )
All I could think was "how the hell did the writers know anything about Bamse or even what it was?!"

Not exactly, but I was kind of smitten that the St. Louis Arch was in the first Ace Attorney Investigations game. Usually if it's a prop from the US in a Japanese thing it's Statue of Liberty or Mount Rushmore.

That counts, too, I think. Those are after all the main "go to's" to represent US.

Of course, I might not be able to place or name that monument correctly, but I'd know it was an iconic thing from the US.

Ohh Bamse! I grew up with him!

And yeah it has happened a couple of times I think, but I can't remember anything specific right now.

AYRT

I did, too. We might have had a subscription for it when I was a kid.

Another example I remembered just now was that Nanne Grönvall's music suddenly was popular for AMVs. That was really ot of the blue.

When that happens my reaction is most of the time 1. oh, I got that reference :) 2. I wonder what they said in the original?

In the original..? Meaning that you're watching foreign media dubbed to your native tounge? I'm a bit confused.

Yes, that's what I meant. Sorry, I guess I misread the original post.

Oh, that's ok. I did refer to undubbed, though, as dubbed takes liberties to insert things that are perhaps more familliar to us for whatever reason. I've noticed that it happens with subtitles, too, sometimes.

Peter Fox mentioned in a cracked article really confused me, but there was also this odd proud moment that someone loved his stuff even though he sings in german and there's really no reason I know of that he should be known outside of german speaking countries.
