I find it so weird how segregated fandom is genderwise.

MRA detected.

Giving you a benefit of the doub you do not deserve: They'e called safe spaces fuckhead. Women don't feel safe in mixed areas. Male dominated areas are hostile towards women, and men tend to turn mixed spaces into male dominated spaces pretty quickly.

I'm pretty far from MRA. It might do you some good not to assume that if someone doesn't align with your beliefs 100% that they fall into an extremist political group and not come out insulting me.

I'm not really interested in arguing with you on this since you've already proven you're going to be hostile and make assumptions about me.

Well that escalated quickly.

You do not need to be an MRA to notice it and find it a bit weird. Fandom is more gender segregated than ANY of my real life social groups have ever been.

oh please...

Women don't feel safe in mixed areas.

Please don't try and speak for me, anon. I don't like it. :(

I love "mixed areas". Most of my friends are married couples, and I've never experienced this "male domination", even when the guys were in the majority of the get-together.

I feel this way too, and it depresses me. (And I'm female. Since overlyhostile!anon has made their presence known.)

Yeah, you'd think with online anonymity and a shared love of really geeky thing you'd get more crossover, especially with things aimed at a general audience. But it feels like women huddle towards the tumblr and livejournal corner while men are more 4chan and reddit. (I'm probably missing more, but that's all the coming to mind.)

It makes me sad since my first forum was pretty evenly split and with the move to more social media sites I feel like the divide is will become more obvious and even places like twitter where there's a roughly equal amounts of women and men, both generally keep to their own communities in there since they have no connections with the opposite gendered ones.

I like that it's segregated. I'm a woman and while I won't be crying about needing a 'safe space' online, I can't deny it's nice to express myself fully with mostly female fans. I'm guess I'm the female version of being sexist because I'm just not very interested in the male viewpoint of being a fan and being fannish. On the other hand, you could say it's because I'm exposed to the male viewpoint in nearly every other point of my life, it's nice that I don't have to be in fandom.

+1

I'm not anti-male fans, but there are some discussions I just prefer to have with women. Shipping in a show not really aimed at women? How attractive that actor is? How the writing treats women/different races? Yeah, I prefer to talk to female fans.

I can't say I like it, but when I swim in either side, I feel like I can understand how it happened. I feel really alienated and uncomfortable, sometimes, actively participating in fandom in majority-dude spaces for a variety of reasons, and it's not because I think Dudes Are The Devil. I'm more likely to quietly lurk where guys dominate, and I wonder how many guys lurk where girls dominate.
