Reconciling conflicting canons

(Anonymous) 2014-08-24 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Kinda inspired by the wait, what thread above

Sometimes when a show is dubbed there are minor differences to the original version. Or an adaption/spin-off whatever changes some aspect of a work. How do you handle that? Do you pick and choose what you like better, adopt a original version wins stance or try to find some kind of middle ground how both canons could be equally true?

I usually decide that the two adaptations exist in two different parallel universes.

I usually just take them as AU versions of each other.

Depends on the canon, usually. If the canon is old and large and canonically contradicts itself (Doctor Who; Star Trek), then I usually would just decide which side suits my purposes best in the conflicted issue.

Like I'm more likely to say that the UNIT stories took place in the 1970s, but when the show itself lampshades the discrepancy, either one works.

Normally, I treat them as completely separate fictional universes, but the Murder Rooms canons are a notable exception. My headcanon!Murder Rooms is an awesome merge of the book and the TV canon, which is actually pretty sad, seeing as so few people are into the books as well as into the series.

I have yet to work out why this exception is a thing.

Different universes. Pretty much.

My reaction is generally "Challenge accepted!" ... I try to find a way to incorporate both canons

Kind of a combination of all of those, depending on the situation/

If it's something like the first Highlander movie vs. the show vs. the other movies, I see them as taking place in different universes that happen to share the concept of immortals and certain characters.

If it's something that's continuously changing and retconning itself, like superhero comics, I kind of take it all as a sort of smushed-together canon, with some things being softer canon than others.

If it's a fairly limited amount of retconning, I usually just accept it or think of the change as two AUs (depends on the circumstances).

Either parallel universes or best of both worlds. I tend to pick and choose what i accept in all canons

Easy, the concept of canon is bullshit. There's this version, that version, and possibly a third version. As long as you're clear which version you're referencing they can all coexist.
