Fic advice...?

(Anonymous) 2014-08-24 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm writing a fic and I'm not sure whose perspective to write it in...I keep switching as the story goes on...the villain's pov keeps appearing, and the lead heroine's voice seems to keep being put on the back burner. I also fear that I may not be writing her correctly (this is an AU, and she's obviously going to be slightly different because certain events don't occur= she doesn't change a certain way, etc.) For that, I have been using beta...well...I was. I don't know if I should keep switching (I put clear markers when I do), if I should write it from one pov or just completely stay away from their minds.

Any suggestions? Also, does anyone out there feel well enough acquainted with Martha Jones? Beta request/general pointers on her personality?

Thanks!

I think switching is fine as long as you don't switch too frequently/in the middle of a scene. Perhaps make sure to have various external events happen to mark POV shifts too -- for example, the end of a day, leaving one location to travel to another, arriving at a destination, the end of a period of action, someone leaving a room, two people departing from each other's immediate company, are all good places to make a POV switch.

Third person omniscient is my favorite tense.

OP

It's sort of in 3rd person, there's no first...but it's just 3rd person delving into X character's brain...

That's...what third person omniscient does. And a great many books don't limit themselves to peeking into one person's head, so I think you're fine.

Just don't include "A's POV, B's POV". Let it flow naturally. Changing POVs can be really interesting.

The thing I liked about Martha is that she knows what she wants. Being a doctor takes some persistence and is generally cool.
