Kinda spoiler for the end of Tiger & Bunny

(Anonymous) 2014-08-25 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
When the series was first airing the last couple of episodes, and everyone was freaking out live on the internet, I was sitting there kind of hoping they really HAD killed Kotetsu.

I was kind of disappointed when they didn't, and I think the story would have been much stronger that way. Kind of suspect they originally were going to end like that, but since the series was unexpectedly popular, they needed to leave it open for sequels.

Then I read about some official interview or something where it was said that if Kotetsu had died there, Barnaby would never have recovered, he would have been completely emotionally shattered... and I kind of want that ending even MORE now.

(And for the record, I like both Kotetsu and Barnaby a lot, Kotetsu being one of my favorite characters in anything EVER.)

Oh man...

I...sorta get why you would think the series would have been 'stronger' that way, because for sure that would've been a massive punch in the gut; I never would've recovered either. The reason I started watching Tiger and Bunny in the first place was because I had heard about how sweet and funny and feel good it was, and if Kotetsu had died it would've ruined everything for me. Like...I probably would've been so upset that I never would've watched an episode ever again. :( So, yea, it would've been effective as hell, can't deny that, but...damn, that would've been absolutely brutal.

(Not that you're wrong for wanting this or anything, and honestly I bet someone has written it before, but...yea.)

...And see, here I'm baffled by the idea that T&B was seen as a sweet, funny, feel-good series. It was pretty dark from the outset, and the second half just kept getting more and more so. The reveal of Lunatic's backstory, and the parallels with Kotetsu's current situation, for instance. The series was already pretty darned brutal.

So HAPPY ENDO just seemed to clash with what the series was about to begin with to me. Not that it didn't have its fun happy friendship-and-family moments, but it always seemed that there was always a layer of dirt beneath the shiny veneer... and then another shiny veneer beneath the layer of dirt to keep things from getting too bleak, of course. I love how episode 15 made us all laugh our heads off at stuff like Kotetsu and his stupid bathing suit, and then we all got to the end and went "OH NOW I SEE WHY THIS EPISODE MADE THE DIRECTOR CRY."

(And I'd write it myself, really... it's the kind of thing I've been known to write in other fandoms, hahah.)

See, I realize that Tiger and Bunny dealt with a lot of very depressing and serious topics (I had nooo idea I would cry that much), but despite that it had a great sense of humor and always seemed to snap back from the dark stuff. There was plenty of humor and hope and sweetness even with all the bad and craziness going on. For me, the ending was perfect; Kotetsu might've not died, but his life did change and he had to adjust. It might not be the most drastic ending, but I thought it fit.

Different strokes and all that though?

Darker and edgier is not automatically better.

Agreed - but "oh by the way not really dead just fine now! False alarm! Even though it was just revealed that the entire system is screwed beyond belief, let's just go back to the status quo and it's a happy ending for everyone except the big bad!" is no better than "dark and edgy for the sake of being dark and edgy".

It would have been interesting to see how everyone dealt with the loss, whether HeroTV maintained "business as usual", if Wild Tiger was remembered as a hero on par with Legend due to his death in the line of duty, what Kaede thought of her father now, what Barnaby wound up doing that did NOT involve going back to being a hero, since he'd been groomed for that his whole life but now didn't have Kotetsu as an excuse to return...

It just makes for so many more interesting possibilities than what the real ending showed. Granted, there are other ways the ending could have been made more interesting than by having a main character die, but since it looked like that was where they were going, it's kind of frustrating that they completely cheaped out and just sort of rebooted.

Eh. My favorite character by far was Kotetsu so basically, if they'd killed him off it would've been the furthest thing from interesting to me because I'm interested in how he's affected by things, not the other way around.

I sort of agree, only I don't want to say they should have killed him off for being edgy. It just felt like his arc was winding up to something, and the status quo ending just felt lazy. I saw one anime blogger say Kotetsu's arc would have felt tighter if he retired at the end and went back home to Kaede, and I agree with him. The ending just felt so blatantly like a sequel hook to me.
