I use a beta when the rules of the fest or challenge say I have to use one. If I'm just posting something for my own enjoyment, I might or might not have someone look over my fic for me.

It's frustrating when a beta doesn't know who the Axis powers were when she's beta reading your fic set in WWII. Or when you use the word "pistoning" and your beta tells you it's not a word and perhaps you mean "pistoling".
