I find the mentality of "smaller fandoms are so much better" than bigger fandoms to be pretentious, haughty, and unnecessarily possessive of a specific fandom mentality. Small fandoms aren't inherently less full of wank, better fic or higher quality fans.

I'm not sure if I agree completely. Small fandoms aren't better by merit of being small, of course, but the drama in megafandoms can reach levels that small fandoms can't really reach because of their size.

As for quality, smaller fandoms has much less range so there probably won't be anything fantastically amazing or horrifyingly bad. However, since they're small the talent inside them is easier to manipulate or attract, so you might end up with a group of related people who are skilled or fandom guidelines/etiquette that encourages improvement, but megafandoms will probably have a larger amount of better (and worse) fanworks.

I do agree that elitism about small fandoms is rather silly and pretentious, though.
