Your Fandom Secrets: Back Again!

[personal profile] dancing_clown 2014-08-25 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
In addition to the master index I've got going on, I've decided to periodically put a few old secrets back to the limelight. Check it out after the games thread.

And not to stoke the "fandom secrets is dying!!" fire, I do find it interesting to note that September 2007 was a big month for us. The "Name That Fandom" thread was added and on the week of September 9, a 350-secret cap was placed on the submission post. And that still allowed for 50 secrets per post.

Words you lose respect for people using.

We all have a few of them.

Including the obvious like people using prejudiced, offensive slurs, I would say people who ever use the word "basic" when reference to someone being lame is someone I lose respect for. Usually because the only people I've come across who unironically use the word "basic" or "basic bitch" tend to be bratty, entitled people who are manchildren and womenchildren.

That and people who use the word "ratchet" when they're not referring to the mechanical device. Typically because when I finally looked up the meaning on urban dictionary, a lot of the definitions came across as not only sexist but pretty racist.

Is there another way to use ratchet besides a) referring to the tool or b) ratcheting up the tension (for example)?

Go look on Urbandictionary.

Homosexuals and females leave a bad taste in my mouth depending on the context. Usually seems really detached and judgmental to me.

Sheeple, however, is a hilariously adorable word to me. So even though I'll probably look down on someone using it, it's in a cute dumb puppy sort of way.

Females is so weird to me. Like I'm ESL so obviously I might not getting something, but in my language the only time you refer to something as a "female" is when you're talking about a thing or an animal.

Also I never see people say males when talking about men, so yeah, it just seems fishy all around.

People who use the word haters. I don't lose respect for them or anything like that, it's just that it's thrown around at even the slightest bit of criticism these days so it is hard for me to take it seriously.

Breeder.

Homophobic slurs are offensive, that's obvious. But using 'breeder' to describe heteros? Not as bad as 'faggot' because it hasn't been painted on someone's body after getting beat up, or on the sides of houses and cars....and yet, it's offensive to me because it reduces me down to one basic function of my life - something I would think they'd have a handle on understanding.

But maybe I'm asking too much.

Mind if I piggyback off this slightly? Anybody who uses words like crotchdroppings or crotchfruit to refer to children. Basically any of the horrible vocab that some childfree people use.

Yes, that's disgusting.

I hate "Thirsty" and "Flawless" and a lot of ONTD/Tumblr/wherever it came from internet slag, and I tend to roll my eyes at people who use it.

The N-word, C-word, etc. whether they are "allowed" to or not.

Re: Words you lose respect for people using.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-26 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
I've never seen "thirsty".

any ONTD ~original~ word is bound to be 10x stupider than your average slang, that's for sure.

I've never seen anyone use the terms alpha/beta, in reference to people, who wasn't a giant douchewad.

I almost forgot about this. I think I successfully annoyed a couple of my friends enough each time they said it that they finally gave up on using it around me.

i was watching this youtube channel that uploaded a video of some guy who apparently is well known on some parts of the internet for being a skeevy asshole, and he was video taping some girl doing gymnastics moves but trying to get crotch shots and just being creepy in general. didnt have permission to be taping the girl or anything. someone in the crowd noticed and told him to put his phone away and he kept yelling about how he was just recording in a public space and telling this lady to mind her own business and was calling her a cunt and whore and stuff. all the comments on the video were weirdos being like "lmao this guy is so alpha"

and anybody who argued otherwise was a "butthurt beta"

it's really disconcerting to see so many sad guys believe in this kind of alpha-beta dichotomy where being abusive or aggressive is the ideal. luckily most of these guys are too chickenshit to practice what they preach in person and more or less just sit around on bodybuilding forums or whatever and whine about being friendzoned to likeminded creeps but

that same kind of mentality doesnt have to be directly harmful to be really fucked up and contribute to victim blaming and misogyny and stuff, and i definitely dont have any respect for guys who are clueless enough to buy into this shit. listening to women is soooo hard so they just make up whatever they want about why nobody loves them - theres nothing respectable about that.

so yeah i def agree

The N-word. An ex-friend of mine used it and I completely lost any respect I had for her because of it.

It's a bit like getting splashed with cold water. It's like a rude awakening to someone's shitty worthlessness.

WHY ARE YOU SO GODDAMN BEAUTIFUL

(Anonymous) 2014-08-26 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
Holy crap. I could just stare at you all day. And I am so in love, and that is so stupid.

Re: WHY ARE YOU SO GODDAMN BEAUTIFUL

(Anonymous) 2014-08-26 05:09 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, that's not stupid, OP. I've been in love with a guy for six years, and looking at him, even now, is like looking at the most perfect thing I've ever seen in my whole life long, like looking at family that I love dearly and the handsome stranger on the train in a beautiful woman's hottest fantasy. He doesn't have perfect features, but he's perfect to me, every movement, every word he says.

If only he knew.
