I want to be a writer - but I hate revisions

(Anonymous) 2014-08-25 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
So one of my problems is that as much as I love writing, it's hard for me to revise. Which... poses problems.

It's not a butthurt thing; I LIKE constructive criticism. It's just hard for me to spend time redoing things, especially if it's been a while since I've written something - and editors can take forever to respond. So.

How does one get over hating revisions?

Put it down for a couple days before starting in again. It helps with the burnout.

Thanks - I have found that easier, so maybe I will try it more. :)

I'm working on that myself. I have a bad habit of running off to work on something new and never getting back to my old projects after the first draft.

Wait for a while. Don't start revising right away. Not only does it make revising less tedious, it makes your revisions better, because you gain a little more time/distance between you and the thing you wrote.

Well, fwiw, there are some writers that (supposedly) never revise(d): Joyce Carol Oates, and (I think) Asimov.

AYRT - Wouldn't their editors have noticed?

You know, though, some writers who have a reputation for just "flowing" and not revising (like Jack Kerouac or Allen Ginsberg) actually edited their work.
