Sometimes, sure, but one of my favorite characters is very realistically portrayed as dealing with depression (it even gets worse during the rainy season!) and anxiety, despite the fact that (and sometimes because) he can do some pretty amazing things. Part of why I love him is because I can identify so strongly with him, and I've never come across a character before who embodies so well the issues that I've had.

Really, I think it's just a good writing vs. bad writing thing.
