Except in the opening of Northanger Abbey, which hits you with the satire pretty openly:

"Her mother was a woman of useful plain sense, with a good temper, and, what is more remarkable, with a good constitution. She had three sons before Catherine was born; and instead of dying in bringing the latter into the world, as anybody might expect, she still lived on—lived to have six children more—to see them growing up around her, and to enjoy excellent health herself."

I love Northanger Abbey. Catherine and Henry are my favorite Austen couple.

...well, that might be why I have so much trouble with Austen. I tend to read literally. Very literally. (Autism thing. I have a deep loathing for people who post satire articles on places like ontd_p or FB without mentioning it's fucking satire. Sigh.)

Yeah, that would make sense. Almost all of Austen's humour is very tongue-in-cheek (I'm pretty sure the opening line of P&P is an example of this).
