To use your analogy, it sounds like OP used to buy tickets every once in awhile, but since they never came close to winning they're giving up on playing the game. Which just ensures that you won't win. Unless you're really lucky and find a winning ticket between the couch cushions or something.

But yes, you usually get out of life what you put into it. And there'll always be hurdles (namely money related) to overcome.
