He was cute. And I hate how his replacement feels just like that, a replacement. Though, I do agree, he wasn't a main character.

On a similar note, Jesus, the turn around rate for Teen Wolf's cast is worse than the turn around rate for drummers in Spinal Tap.

*high fives you for Spinal Tap reference*

I always liked the -idea- of Danny, but the actor was always kind of terrible and he never got any interesting storylines or character developments or ANTHING really, so I fail to see why I was supposed to get invested in his character and miss him now.

"Because he was gaaaay!!!! One of the most wonderful things you could ever be on a TV program, and now he's gone, like a unicorn! An under-developed unicorn because Jeff Davis is just a big dumb hack!!"

I think that pretty much covers the genesis of all the outrage.

Now I'm pretty behind on Teen Wolf but Danny was a generic nice guy who occasionally made faces like other cast members were weird so I think it's cynical to assume that some people must like him for pure tokenism. He's poorly developed but there are tons of characters, especially on a show like that one, who are popular but poorly developed.

Could it be because the show is called Teen Wolf and it revolves mostly around Scott and his pack and not their lacrosse teammate Danny? Nice enough seeming guy that he is.

I think it was because Danny as a character had potential but was so underutilized/wasted. His only real storyline was the stuff with Ethan and it wasn't much. Then we get the bomb at the end of S3 that he knew about werewolves the whole time (awesome Lost Boys reference), which could have opened up an actual storyline for him and when S4 started, he was nowhere to be seen and has seemingly been replaced as the token gay by Mason.

I agree people shouldn't still be harping about it, but it is aggravating.

OT - I was hoping they'd at least mention where Isaac was in story, but except for one mention by Coach it's like he never existed :/

He was also Jackson's best friend in season one and helped advance his story line in season two. Plus, he evidently is really in to organizing *fabulous* parties.

I didn't mention being Jackson's best friend because that also wasn't much of a storyline for him. He usually only had a few lines every time we saw him *shrugs*

He was basically there so Jeff Davis could say, "Look how progressive and gay-friendly our show is!" and then didn't do anything with him.

Yeah, that's what bothered me. Danny could have been an integral character, the framework was there for him to be more than wallpaper, but it never happened for no apparent reason. And it's not unique to him, either, it's something that keeps happening with most of the side characters, like Isaac, and they're introduced as if they'll serve some sort of purpose and then they're abruptly dropped without ever doing so, like whoever is popping these people in and out has a really short attention span.

The role was badly cast, so I'm glad Danny's gone. TW does deserve to be slammed for constantly stating how gay-friendly the show is, which is a bald-faced lie.

As much as I love Danny, I agree with these and other criticisms about the character. But I will continue to harp about his treatment and now absence because it's a perfect example of one of the numerous frustrations with this show. I suspect this is the case for many other people as well - he's sort of become shorthand for all the wasted potential.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-27 06:37 pm (UTC)(link)
But when he's the only example used, perfect or not,...he looks like the only example. Which makes it hard for other people to take your point seriously.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-27 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
He's not the only example. There's Erica, Boyd, Cora. I'm sure there are others. He's just the latest example compounded by the fact that for the longest time he was also the only queer representation on the show. Plus getting rid of him just so they could replace him with another token gay character. I mean it's 2014. Shows can do better than that surely.
