What I find appalling about tumblr is watching people who at one point were lucid and rational disappear into the hivemind, like cultists. It's not a healthy environment for developing minds/personalities.

I don't know about the formerly rational, but as for developing minds - the worst of them were going to be bad no matter what. I was definitely as virulently... passionate and obsessive as the average tumblrite as a teenager. My crusading just came out as bible-thumping, because that's what I was exposed to, but it could have been conspiracy theories or social justice or some other thing just as easily. IMO, tumblr-style social justice (even when engaged in a shallow manner) is not a bad way to spend the energy.
