When you log IP addresses, you don't use it to contact authorities and stuff, right? Sometimes I vent here about my parents but I'm nervous to do it when logging is on in case you use my location to call the cops and interfere in my life because so many people might think it's the right thing to do but it will only make things incomprehensibly worse for me. I want to feel safe...can I feel safe even with logging on?

Oh, no I'd never murder them! Thanks. I'm always paranoid about people getting too concerned about what I say and acting on it despite not knowing me.

Nah. Like you said, it's really difficult to tell the whole truth from random internet comments.

If someone is being all "i plan to shoot up my school here are legitimate photos of my gun and my school address" or "i'm going to kill myself FS on this particular date by jumping off a specific building at some place" and people's lives seem like they're in immediate danger, then... well yeah, lots of us would probably report that!

But stuff like "I had/have abusive parents" or "I am feeling suicidal" (as examples) is pretty common to talk about online, without meaning that anybody is going to go do something drastic that would need authorities to be alerted or anything. Lots of people here have talked about it in the past.
