I liked Clara until series 8's premiere, where she suddenly became shallow and nearly left the Doctor because he wasn't young anymore.

Okay like

Don't like her if you don't like her, think that Moffat failed if you think Moffat failed, but that's not what happened. That's literally the exact opposite of what happened. Moffat pretty much devoted half of the episode to showing that's not what happened. I mean, I think the fact that he went to such lengths to show that's not what happened is one of the major problems with the episode.

Yeah, either you didn't watch the show and got that from someone else or you're a complete moron because the entire point was that she didn't care what he LOOKED like.

I can see how someone would make the mistake, actually. Moffat, in his enduring wisdom, completely headfakes in that direction. Everything that Clara says in the opening scenes is purposefully ambiguous - it could either be about the Doctor not being young and sexy anymore, or it could be a concern about her thinking he's not the Doctor anymore because she's frightened by his post-regen craziness. And Vastra's and Jenny's suggestions and assumptions, combined maybe with our natural inclinations, lead us to assume that it's about the Doctor not being sexy anymore. The problem is compounded by the fact that Clara is never quite explicit about what her issue really is. She just goes off on a big thing about how she's not superficial. But she doesn't explain. So it's a misunderstanding that Moffat invites.

I'm not sure why he invites the misunderstanding the way he does. I think part of it might have to do with the meta-commentary that's probably going on there. I think a lot of it is just his style. He thinks it's clever or something. I don't know. Fucking Moffat.
