Favorite First-Person Fanfics?

(Anonymous) 2014-08-28 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
I've noticed that people around here tend to either dislike fanfics that are written in the first person, or think they're very hard to do right and like very few of them. I sorta agree with the second type: I really love first-person fanfics when I do manage to find a good one because they let you see something so unique about the character's voice/limited perspective, but there aren't very many good ones.

Well, to those of you who remember some first-person fanfics that you liked, rec those fics here! Give at least the title, and preferably the link as well, so the rest of us can check them out :)

Eh, I agree that they can be harder to do right because you have to have a much better grasp on the character's voice (or at least one your reader agrees with) but by far and away my most popular fic is all first-person, so clearly the hate-on f!s seems to have for first person isn't universal.

I guess I should link it, lol.

I like first person best when there's some really good reason for it to be first person and not third person.

One example is this Starsky and Hutch fic (which I think I first read after seeing it recced on F!S). It's is a WIP, which is tragic, but the narrating character's "voice" is just SO excellent and the subject matter of the fic makes it really appropriate for the fic to be first person:

Eh, they are just too easy to drift into Mary Sue and Marty Stu territory. The latter especially. Male characters inevitably drift into a sort of ultra sharp Dirty Harry voice, with added omni-disciplinary genius knowledge, in 1st person fanfics. Even if they avoid that, they usually fall into the trap of just dryly delivering exposition instead of dialogue. Although that happens in third person limited fics a lot too.

This isn't a thread about complaining about first-person fics though.

It's a thread about reccing the first-person fics that you actually DO like.

There's a really good one I read in Star Trek that I can't find the link to, but it's set in the mirror!verse and it's basically Captain Kirk confronting Spock about one of the events of the Mirror Mirror episode, at knife point. I just remember really liking it.

I love it.

And it wouldn't work nearly as well in third-person.

Light's condescension is a thing of beauty.

Sister by Martha on AO3. It's really good. It's a Stargate Atlantis detective noir AU.
