I know who you actually meant but when I read "Dr. Forrester" for a split second I pictured the MST3K guy.

In Lucifer's Hammer, Dr. Forrester is a scientist who carefully buries a whole library of how-to books and other useful tomes hoping to use them (and his knowledge) to buy his way into any stable community that surfaces after the comet falls. He's worried because he has Type I diabetes and thinks his upkeep will be costly (he knows how to extract insulin from a sheep pancreas, but are they willing to slaughter a sheep a month to keep him alive?)
