Anti-anxiety/depression meds.....

[personal profile] tabaqui 2014-08-28 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Someone dear to me is starting on Citalopram. The only other med they take is birth control. Anyone here had any experience with it? Anything to watch out for? Did it *work*?

They don't have any health issues other than the one they need this med for (like, not diabetic or have heart issues or migraines or anything like that.)

Thanks in advance for any feedback. :)

I was on escitalopram, which is similar, and had terrific results. I had to go off it though because it can lengthen the QT, whatever that is. Still haven't found anything quite as effective.

It might depend what they need it for -- I took it for anxiety, so it might not be such a wonder drug in other cases -- and while I was also on birth control then (and still am), I was on lamotrigine too, which your friend isn't. Not sure if they interacted, but I doubt an interaction between unrelated drugs would make one work better, so...

It's mainly for anxiety. She *does* have a fast/arrhythmic heart beat sometimes, though the doc says it's nothing to be concerned about (and QT has something to do with that).

Thanks - I shall make sure she knows/asks her doc.

I've been on both for ages now and thankfully nothing seems to have happened, so either my birth control isn't hormonal or I just got lucky and dodged a bad possibility.

I recently started on escitalopram and I am already not enjoying the sexual side effects. Did you experience any of that?

What do you mean by sexual side effects?

SA

If you mean it lowers sex drive (a lot of meds tend to list that, I've noticed), I never had one to begin with, so I can't say I noticed.

My grandmother took Cipramil and had relatively good results with it, though obviously she was not on birth control then anymore, so not sure how it would interact. Best ask a doctor for possible interactions.

The doc knew about the bc, so I can only assume that it's not an issue. Thanks, though.

Better off asking a pharmacist about the way different medicines interact. Docs aren't always up on that.

I started taking Citalopram two weeks ago. So it's early days yet, but so far, it has been fantastic. Absolutely fucking fantastic. In terms of side effects, very few that I've noticed - some drowsiness has probably been the worst of it. In terms of primary effect, it's been really great. I am so much less anxious, I am so much less given to intense negative self-image, I feel like I have so much more energy. It's been great yet.

Like I say, it's early days yet. And I don't have any real points of comparison for it, since I've never really taken anything else. And it can vary from person to person. But just speaking for myself, I'm obviously very positive about it.

Wow, nice! So glad it's doing good things for you! I know from reading and what the doc told her that it usually takes up to 4 weeks to see any kind of real change, so - nice to see that it can move a little more quickly, sometimes.

I think being positive helps, too. Thanks for sharing!

My exboyfriend had some initial insomnia on it, but that faded about three weeks in. It seemed to do really good things for him. (He had chronic depressive disorder and anxiety.)

Good to know. Obviously no long-term side effects, or at least - negligible ones? Thanks!

I took celexa/citalopram when I was depressed for several years. Never really noticed any side effects that were too negative - it made me drowsy, but I started taking it at night instead of in the morning and that was great. I did feel a lot better overall. I can't promise it was the medication so much as the feeling that I was finally taking steps to stop my depression, and citalopram was the first medication my doctor prescribed me, but my depression definitely died down while I took it.

I also noticed that I stopped getting horrible period cramps. Don't know if it's related or not, but after I stopped taking it, I got bad periods again. Oh well.

Thanks!

Didn't work for me, had ugly side effects, switched to a different medication.

I've been on the current formulation for several years, not perfect but it helps.

Started Zoloft two weeks ago, and my mood's improved a bit but oh god, the insomnia! I can get to sleep okay, but I wake up after like four hours and CANNOT get back to sleep. If it hasn't eased off in another two weeks, I'm going to try sleeping pills.

Citalopram worked for me at first, but then I crashed right back down. Presently on sertraline, which is doing better so far.
