general escapism

I used to have a ritual of reading Shirley Jackson's short story "Louisa, Please Come Home" aloud to myself when I needed cheering up. (It's about a 19 year old college student who walks away from her home and makes herself disappear--"All I wanted was to fade into some background where they would never see me.") Three years later, a neighbor runs into her and forces her to go back to her old home with him--he's intent on collecting the reward they've offered for her safe return. To both his and her surprise, the family refuse to recognize her, presumably because they never really knew her to begin with.

But yes, my favorite fantasy was to disappear.
