College

(Anonymous) 2014-08-29 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
I'm supposed to graduate next semester but I'm thinking of saying screw it and double majoring in another subject, mostly because I want a chance to learn a third language. Damn, should I fucking do it or not?

1. Are you (or your parents) paying for college?
2. Would you be using this language for something specific?

I ask because it's really fucking easy to fall into the trap of staying in school longer than you need to in an effort to put off adulthood. I'm not saying that's you! But make sure it isn't.

I'm covering it and all my bills so I'm not putting it on anyone. I just feel like there's more I want to learn before I finish.

That really depends.

Where o you live? How rich are you/your family? Are you going to plummet yourself in debt? How will job opportunities differ with a third language?

But hey, if you enjoy studying, and it won't cripple you financially I'd say go for it.

I already have student loan debt.
Ultimately, I want to apply to grad school but my GPA isn't where I want it before I apply.
I'm thinking about it. Mostly, I'm externalizing what I've been considering today. Thanks for the feedback.

First some questions: Why do you want to learn that third language? Will it open job opportunities for you later on or is it just for fun? Will you get to use it on a semi-regular basis?

I know my university at least recommends to not take language classes without knowing that you will get a use for it. I mean, it's cool to be able to speak different languages, but if you don't get to use it, it's fairly pointless and you will most likely forget a lot of it. I know my French has deteriorated a lot since I graduated high school, not to mention my Mandarin where I can barely introduce myself anymore.

It's also smart to think about other factors, like how this will affect you financially and such.

I want to learn it for fun but I know it would help me professionally down the line.

I didn't enjoy studying language in my uni, so idk. An intensive lanuage course'd probably be more effective.

If you enjoy a student life and want to delay adulthood, go for it!

I do like student life, I won't lie. School is fun.

It could be a smart decision--or not--depending on how much longer you'll be in school, and whether the second major will make you more marketable when you get out.

Re: College

I'm thinking a third language might make me more desirable because the language I studied when I first went has basically dried up in my head and a second language looks good when you apply to publishing companies (or so I've heard). And I'm interested in the language personally, so seems like I'd get something out of it personally.

I'd suggest graduate, and take classes at a community college if possible, because it'll be way cheaper. Those credits are all the same, anyway. Get flashcards and books and whatnot, twenty minutes a day, and you'll learn just as well as majoring in it, you just wouldn't have the set schedule. Also, you can buy the textbook and not take the class. There are workbooks you can get at larger bookstores or online. Online newspapers. There are tons of resources.

Edit: I saw above you mentioning raising your GPA. Go for it, then. There's everything right with raising your GPA by doing something you enjoy.

This. The community college near me has an excellent, excellent Spanish program, for example. They also have regular meetings on campus where people practice their conversational skills, dedicated teachers, school trips you can take AND it's a hell of a lot cheaper.

College isn't your only chance to learn a third language, though? It's weird, because your responses seem to indicate you think that after graduation, you've blown your chance at expanding your knowledge. You won't be. Smart people learn new things all their lives.

On a more practical level, you need to ask yourself whether or not it's worth another X number of years' tuition. I mean, is there NO OTHER WAY to learn, say, French without staying in school longer? Have you looked into community college courses, books, audio tapes, Rosetta stone, private tutor, whatever? Because just about any of those options will be cheaper than tuition.

I know you're right here, including about how I feel like this is my only chance. I didn't really consider it but the first time I went to college, it was as a dual enrollment student and when my parents couldn't afford to send me to college after I graduated it was pretty heartbreaking for me. It was six years before I went back and I do feel like if I don't get everything I can out of it now, I'll never be able to go back if I want to.

Anyway, thanks for your advice. It's given me something to consider.
