Okay, even though you chose a rather arrogant way of saying it and agreeing with you immediately paints me with the same brush... yeah, I've been in that situation, too. My advanced creative writing class (in university, mind you) was a total waste of time, and I spent the majority of it writing my own characters in porn so that I could stomach the poetry that was really a bad country song in lack-of-disguise.

The worst part was that there was a pair of anime fans in the class ('Have you heard of Fanfiction.net? I have an account there!'), and one of them wrote the most ludicrous attempts at original fantasy I've ever heard read aloud... and was praised for its originality by everyone else but me, who ripped into her for bastardizing her piggybacked mythology of choice and getting some major concepts completely wrong.

And I brought my originals and my fanfics to class. And I read them. And I waited in silence as my classmates tried to formulate critiques.

And my head hit desk when someone asked if the 'crossover' part was when the elf fucked the werewolf.

I just needed to get that off my chest. Again. Reading the secret brought it up.

...there were elves fucking werewolves?

I just, I don't know. If I had been in that class, I probably would have abstained from critiquing as well.

Heh. Okay, fair enough. I'd had enough that I was deliberately trying to shock a few people there.

Truly, your heartbreaking works of staggering genius were too much for those plebes to handle.

:| Regardless of how well written you think it was, I'd be incredibly taken aback by anyone who comes out and writes fanfic for a uni creative writing class.

I've brought in at least one story that's technically fanfiction to each creative writing class I've ever been in, and they were as well-received as anything else I'd written (which is to say, fairly well without scaring off genuine critique). There's a small amount of room for fanfiction in academia and in what's considered to be "legitimate" if it's well-written enough and makes some sort of point or gives an alternate interpretation of the original text.

Fair and true enough. My apologies for coming off as an ass and worse. This is definitely the wrong place for me to trip over my ego and fall on my face... at least, in the comments.

This place is the last place to look for sympathy ya know.

Gotta say though, I created some real works of "Pure Genius!!!" (aka absolute crap) when I was in school. As long as you can look back and go "Maybe that wasn't such a great idea after all..." you're on the right track.
