(Anonymous) 2007-12-10 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)The new mods are slowly trying to fix this problem that was handed to them since origin by trying to incorprate plot elements (like a justice system, a currency, plot-focused activities and that tentative plot a while ago) and having people vote if they like or not (don't see the point why OP says they are elitists when it's pretty democratic process).
I'd love a more focused plot. I have been a storyteller and mod a lot of multifandom games, my passion are the plot-creations. However, I also know Poly's nature and players didn't join the game because of "the plot." The mods are trying their best to fix this issue that was given to them by the old batch. I understand why they hesitate. When they proposed a curse-subplot that last some days (i.e. witch hunting), people often complain it's "too long."
2. Some degrees of cliques exist in every rp comm. But they are less grossly obvious than before: Gundam Seed clique, Air Gear clique, D. Gray Man clique, etc. And their inter-mixing because they had the same players and group of friends. I remember them. I don't say there aren't, but there are far less than before. Also, now there is actual chance of have action/drama subplots if a crew/character proposes it... This never happened with the old mods; those subplots can last weeks and do make up for the lack of general plot as my personal opinion. That lack of general plot should be corrected soon as people demanded to have a plot like in April in a recent survey.
That made me happy.

(Anonymous) 2007-12-11 12:23 am (UTC)(link)Almost all the City's rules (like how the City Dead cannot return to their own world) have no longer been touched on, but I suppose that is the fault of players for failing to read the FAQ.
But that aside, Poly is not as democratic as one would think. The wrath of players who are mod fanboys and girls is brought down upon anyone who brings up anything less than adulation. Of course, by the strict definition of democracy, majority rules, so your statement is valid, in that respect.
But mods are not infallible, and games are not perfect. So if someone has a suggestion that could improve the game somehow, but is afraid to even say anything out of fear of the majority, how is that fun?
Furthermore, the mods are kind of inefficient. In the beginning, there was ONE mod. Count 'em-- one. And that person got more accomplished than all four of them combined, and never complained, or asked for any form of praise for what they were doing. Does that make them Super-mod? Probably not. Granted, this was eventually extended to 4 mods, but that only increased efficiency.
They were also easier to reach, and more accommodating to players who had special requests.
I'm sure outside of the game, the present mods are all lovely, wonderful people. In fact, I don't doubt it. But just because a person is good doesn't always mean they're the best person for a job. So, if they can't handle the responsibilities that come along with being a mod, for any reason at all, they should simply hand it over to people who can.

(Anonymous) 2007-12-11 01:52 am (UTC)(link)Now some group of characters and beginning to get interested in the plot again. The Doctors and troupe.
Dead characters can return to their world, as long they return dead, and not have died in the City. Is there a case of a city dead that went to their world and returned? I missed it.
"But that aside, Poly is not as democratic as one would think. The wrath of players who are mod fanboys and girls is brought down upon anyone who brings up anything less than adulation. Of course, by the strict definition of democracy, majority rules, so your statement is valid, in that respect."
Unfortunately. It always happens.
Poly started with one but there were a fewer... hundred characters.
"They were also easier to reach, and more accommodating to players who had special requests."
No, they weren't. I had issues with them making me sit and wait for three weeks for a plotline I mailed and IMed three of them for, because one was in hiatus.
Three. Weeks. Of. Delay.
Only one of them read it in the end.
Never got an issue with the new mods. Since they became mods, I pmed them two days before and they listen everything. Even stupid doubts about how such and such curse works.
"I'm sure outside of the game, the present mods are all lovely, wonderful people. In fact, I don't doubt it. But just because a person is good doesn't always mean they're the best person for a job."
That was my opinion of the old mods. I really like them, as people, but they didn't do a good job modding.
not the OP or the other OP
(Anonymous) 2007-12-11 03:32 pm (UTC)(link)Which isn't my original point. My original point is Polychromatic was a different game back then. It was run differently by different people who got the job done in different ways. You can't compare the two at all. Trying to compare them will only result in a who's better than who argument and that doesn't help solve any of the issues that are prevalent within the game right now.

(Anonymous) 2007-12-11 05:58 pm (UTC)(link)I love Poly. I've loved it since it began and continue to love it now too. It isn't perfect. But what game is? I didn't join Poly for the plot or the crack. I'm already in other games for the plot and the crack. I like the rhythm of posting activity and the people. Also the leisure to interact and run my subplots.
The issues most people bring up:
Lack of plot, cliques, mods being slow, oocness, the app form (didn't change, only asked character source). Have always happened since the beginning - it wasn't any different "in the old times" people recalls with a snobby air of nostalgia. I know about the old times too.
It isn't the new mods' complete fault. They are focusing poly into another direction and giving more space to accommodate individual requests/plotlines and the general plot (led by them and not the players). They have to do it slowly because these problems were there since the beginning and makes to have abrupt changes would make everyone paranoid.
There has been a lot of mods which is why I don't know what batch OP or old polynites are talking about. Of the original four replacements that were handled the game, only two of them remain. Two dropped out. Another one came, but was taken away mod powers for being inactive in the long run. Then came Ruxi, Mary, Rizu and recently Jade mod.
They are always looking for people who are able to run and they take away privileges of any player (they can't complain for characterization, for example). No many want to be mods because it's not that you'll get amazing mod powers but get restricted freedoms and responsibilities.

That's why I replied about "the old times."
