Huh. If that's what the artwork looks like i think it's pretty fab.
I have no idea what this is, however.

It's a comic called Saga. With some comics the cover art is much better than what's inside, but not in this case.

Different strokes OP, but imo Saga has some of the best artwork I've ever seen. (I love it for reasons other than that, but...seriously, the artwork is what interested me initially.)

Yeah, a lot of cover art is way better than what's inside.
*googles*

WOW. You're right - interiors and covers are both awesome.

Fiona Staples is the artist. She's great. I think this is a troll secret.

Oh lord, Brian K. Vaughn. I always hugely enjoy his beginnings... and always feel really disappointed by his endings.

Seriously, EVERY TIME. Ex Machina, Y: the Last Man, Pride of Baghdad, AND Runaways. Escapists was the only work of his I didn't finish kicking myself. After Ex Machina (where the ending made me actively angry) I had to just stop reading BKV, because I realized I was getting way too worked up over this shit.

Before the ban got instated, I tried Saga, and I just... *sigh* I didn't CARE. I was just like, "Oh, okay, you've got the angel/heaven/logic/tech analogues and the satyr/hell/intuition/magic analogues, and of course they're at war and both parents are going to die in some horrible soul-crushing way, but they're using US pop culture references even though they're apparently in space, and oh, it's a 'mature' comic, which means they'll say 'fuck' and show boobs."

It was weird, in that I was seeing a new comic and yet, it felt so old hat to me. Which is weird, because I like the art and really do usually love BKV's beginnings and premises!

I'm sorry for the screed, just Brian K. Vaughn leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

The art hideous, really? What's your idea of good comic art?

(Anonymous) 2014-08-31 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
A lot of these complaints are subjective, so I won't really argue with them. You find the characters boring? Okay, sure. But if you don't think the art is Saga is quality, then you're just objectively wrong.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-31 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the art is great in Saga, but the storyline is SO boring. All my friends are really into it, and I feel like I'm missing out. :(

6/10

Not a bad try. I don't have a morale stance on the pirating, but, OP, maybe you do? If so, don't pirate for the joy of depriving people you don't like of your money. I'm not sure why you need it to call yourself a true fan. o_o
Nice horns on a guy!

I don't get it either. And I am a BKV fan as well.

Oh, well, they can't all be winners. There is always his next series.

[identity profile] neoyi.livejournal.com 2014-08-31 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I think Saga for me is more "So Okay It's Average." I've read critics and opinions that herald it as a masterpiece. Well, yes, I do enjoy the characters (Izabel for the win) and I like that it interchanges with differing perspective. Also anything with robots is a plus in my book. I also like it when characters constantly travel because it gives the artist an excuse to show off different locations and cultures. But I don't really see it as some Super Amazing Highly Acclaimed series. The story is very familiar and there hasn't been a whole lot that really stands out to me because of it, so I hesitate to call it a "masterpiece." As it stands, I just think it's a decent comic series.

But I gotta disagree on the artwork, I think it looks lovely.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-31 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't read a lot of Saga, but have loved the art so far (a couple odd times, there were expressions that were distractingly stiff-looking, but that's it).

Storywise... I'm enjoying the concepts more than the execution, in general. Sometimes the dialogue is more "clever" than enjoyable.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-01 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, that's just your opinion.

Personally, I like it. I like the main couple because if you take out the other space junk, they're fairly ordinary. And that's partially why I like them. It seems like most couples are so over the top or not believable.

But tbh, I haven't liked the last few issues. And I'm not liking the direction for the new storyline, especially the Robot Kingdom and drug addiction stuff. I'll stick with it for awhile longer, but yeah, it's getting a bit tedious.

I call troll.

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-09-01 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, you mentioned that. I have to say I'm impressed that for once I'm being falsely accused of being a troll for finding something totally subjective unpleasing.

Believe it or not, it is possible to find the artwork ugly. I think it looks sloppy and gross most of the time. Maybe because I grew up on Shojo manga or maybe I just don't like that stupid watery coloring technique and think the vast majority of character designs are unappealing.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2014-09-01 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
na

That kinda makes sense. I had some friends who were really into manga and disliked the art of westerner comics and other friends who thought the opposite.

I'd say I'm not a huge fan of the watercolours, but I do like the line art. Then again I'm biased because I find Marko hot.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2014-09-01 11:16 am (UTC)(link)
LOL that you think this is sloppy compared to manga. Signed, a manga & anime fan.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2014-09-01 03:51 pm (UTC)(link)
>hates saga's art
>likes shojo manja

So it's safe to say you know literally nothing about art.

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2014-09-01 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I know what I like and I know what I don't like, using my eyeballs.

You're just like those douches who tell people that they have to love Picasso because of his genius, no matter how off-putting or just not to the taste of the viewer his art is.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-01 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
I doubt it. It's not that incendiary, what they're claiming. I can buy someone feeling this way. I don't agree (especially about the art) but I can see someone feeling this way.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-01 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
I like the art a lot but I find myself pretty ambivalent about it, otherwise. I don't really know how I feel - if I find it unpleasant or interesting or if I just want to like it. It's kind of like Batwoman. I'm not sure what I feel about it.

I love it but I haven't been digging the past few chapters tbh.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-01 10:01 am (UTC)(link)
Fuck you for pirating a comic. Who gives a shit whether or not you like it? You're still stealing from the author and publisher.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-01 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I read the first volume and didn't really get the appeal. I can appreciate my share of wacky weird character designs but when every single one is this super bizarre special mutant snowflake without any kind of logical history or purpose behind it I just lose interest. I like worldbuilding that makes sense, this one didn't seem to.
