Martin Freeman as Watson.

Totally agree with you. I feel like Jude Law had the look, but Freeman is Watson to me.

(We don't speak of Nigel Bruce. And while I liked David Burke, but Edward Hardwicke fell way short for me.)

Really? What didn't you like about Edward Hardwicke? (I preferred David Burke -- he was young, intelligent and active and, at the time, it was a surprise -- but I liked Hardwicke's sensitivity).

I think it's partially that I can't stand when shows recast-- I had already grown comfortable with Burke, and the sudden change was jarring. The fact that they both approached the role differently didn't much help, either...but after I put it aside and tried to focus on Hardwicke's performance on its own, while I agree I enjoyed his sensitivity, I felt like the intelligence had been taken down a few notches, which always raises my hackles because I'm viciously opposed to what I call the Dumb Watson Syndrome. So...I wouldn't say I hated him as Watson, because I didn't, it was just a little disappointing.

Yes, I felt that, too, and disappointing. But I'd always liked Edward Hardwicke as an actor, so I suppose that made the change easier for me to accept.

For me, Hardwicke's Watson felt like a side kick, a follower, whereas Burke's felt like someone with a life of his own, an equal.

I tend to agree. I liked Hardwicke as Watson, but both the writing and his take on it was a bit broad and more inclined towards a slightly more naive, foolish Watson.

I like Freeman a lot, but I don't care for that particular interpretation of Watson, so I've got a lot of mixed feelings. :)
