As in the Romans of the Roman Empire? The Western Roman Empire fell more than 300 years before the Vikings began striking out across Europe and the oceans. The Eastern Roman Empire (which became the Byzantine Empire) had borders that receded far from Viking territory before then too.

The Romans, in the crumbling days of the empire, did tell stories about the "barbaric" Goths, who were taking Roman land and sacked Rome itself in 410 CE. But the Goths were Germanic, not Scandinavian. (The Romans actually said similar things about all the tribes attacking their borders, but none of these were the Vikings.)

Edit: Byzantine Empire, not Byzantium.

Huh, I think I misremembered then. I saw something that mentioned it forever ago on History Channel.
