I don't get why people keep bringing up the "but dragons~" thing as an argument against OP. There's a major difference between inaccurately portraying a real thing (Vikings) and portraying something that's wholly fantasy (dragons). Where did this idea come from that the moment you add a single fantastic element, you get to stop trying?

Well anon, personally I'm not fussed really because it's a cartoon aimed at children and definitely not the first show/film/book/etc to have Vikings in horned helmets. Yes, the horned helmet thing is frustrating from a historical POV but I would point out I have two history degrees (concentrating on medieval history, which can include the Vikings depending on your time scale of choice) and it really didn't stop me enjoying HTTYD. Different strokes for different folks I suppose.

If it was something claiming to be an accurate depiction of Viking life, then yeah I'd be annoyed. But a fantasy film for families? It gets a pass.
