It sounds like you need to get some friends who are accepting of what you like.

This is good advice. Get new friends, OP.

Yeah, or, you know, just friends who aren't homophobic - especially if your preferences lie in that area.

Thirding this statement.

Also those two pairing are HUGE in the fandom.

That was my reaction. As far as I know, they're THE pairs in their respective fandoms. Admittedly, I've barely thought about Naruto in years and am new to One Piece (Zoro/Sanji appears to also be huge?) but I'm kinda...wondering where you go on the internet to find a collection of shounen fen who aren't slash fans? When I paid attention to shounen fandoms, m/m slash was dominant in every single one except Claymore (all girls, f/f shipping is rampant) and Fairy Tail (not sure how it happened there, but I actually do pay moderate attention to this fandom, and het does seem to be more common than slash in it).

Huge fandoms like Blech, One Piece and Naruto are, by default, going to have tons of pairings, but het and slash, and ship wars, but slash still seems to be more common than het.

Are you serious? Never mind NaruSasu, that's a juggernaut. But where are you finding enough Zoro/Luffy to say it's big? I'm a huge ZoLu shipper but it's always seemed drowned out by the Zoro/Sanji, which looks infinitely more popular in the English-speaking parts of fandom... (Same with SanzoHakkai from Saiyuki - utterly drowned out by the SanzoGoku and HakkaiGojyo.)

And yeah, agreed on the impossibility of not finding slash in these big fandoms. Heck, it's how I was introduced to the idea, back as a impressionable young girl looking up fic about Duo Maxwell. But maybe that's how OP found out their friends were homophobic... =X

I think they might have gotten Zoro/Luffy mixed up with Sanji/Zoro which is by far the juggernaut ship from what I've seen.

Aww, man, I feel you on the Saiyuki stuff. I can't say for certain if I ship anything in that series, but damn those two pairings do nothing for me. Finding Saiyuki fic that doesn't revolve around those pairings is a pain. Fanart is a bit better, but I've not seen much Sanzo/Hakkai stuff. There's some nice Gojyo/Sanzo art out there though.

Yeah, afaik Zoro/Luffy's a bit more popular on the Japanese side of fandom, but the English side's dominated by Zoro/Sanji. Which, the whole we-fight-because-we-love-each-other! just doesn't work for me, even if they are friends (who'll never admit it). If that makes sense? I just like the two-idiots-in-love dynamic, with Zoro and Luffy XD

With Saiyuki, I love Sanzo+Goku as a parental thing going on, so pairing them up just squicks me so bad. And while I can see Gojyo/Hakkai, I'm pretty indifferent to the dynamic as romantic partners - I prefer them as snarky BFFs. Doesn't help that the mangaka does pretty much push those pairings =X It's seriously hard to find Sanzo/Hakkai or even gen fic in this fandom *sad sigh*

(Anonymous) 2014-09-02 06:41 am (UTC)(link)
Zoro/Sanji pretty much dominates both the English and Japanese side of the fandoms. I've seen a decent amount of Zorro/Luffy fanart though. It's pretty cute. :) I'm not in the fandom or read much of the manga, but I can see why you ship them from what little I know of them. I'm not a huge fan of that whole trope for the most part either tbh. It's just doesn't do much for me. And it makes perfect sense.

Ditto! I love their dynamic, but Goku acts like such a kid and Sanzo's basically a parental figure to him so it squicks me out big time. I could maybe see a bit of a crush on Goku's side but Sanzo reciprocating? Not a chance in hell.

See, normally I'd be all over Gojyo/Hakkai because they're snarky BFFs but it just doesn't click for me. And from what I've seen of the pairing, it is just way too domestic. So I prefer them as friends. Ugh, tell me about it. I tried to find some gen yesterday and even the gen fic seems to have snippy subtext to it. Have any recs? I'd even be willing to try out what little Hakkai/Sanzo recs you got. What do you like about the pairing?

At this point in time, I'm pretty sure I'm doomed to be a mostly rarepair shipper. I've never liked any of the juggernaut ships in the fandoms I've been in. I've got a couple of relatively popular ships, but the ones closest to my heart are rarepairs.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-02 08:15 am (UTC)(link)
I absolutely think Sanzo and Goku love each other, but not in a romantic way. It's just as annoying for me not finding good parental fic as it is finding only shippy fic, to be honest! Ditto on Goku being way too much of a kid - I know the official ages don't have them that far apart, but Goku acts so much younger, I can't ship him with anyone at all. A crush like you said, sure, but nothing serious, and any reciprocation from the older characters is majorly squicky for me. (I guess Goku/Lirin's okay, though - they definitely act like they're the same age!)

For the longest time I tried to get into Gojyo/Hakkai because I usually like the BFFs-to-romantic-partners trope, but it just never clicked. Eventually I figured out it was because of their personalities - they read to me as wanting vastly different things out of a relationship, so while they make great friends, they'd be terrible as romantic partners for each other.

Conversely, I enjoy Sanzo/Hakkai because their personalities work together for me. They're both quiet, bookish sorts, but at the same time, they're both more than willing to call each other on their bullshit. They both have similar issues regarding romantic relationships, I think (I could write an essay on that), but in ways that encourage healing in the other.

Fic! Um, I remember enjoying Keeping Face by GreyLiliy when I first read it, though that was quite a while ago. It's Hakkai-centric and as gen as the manga gets (which is to say not very); the sequel's marked as Sanzo/Hakkai and Sanzo/Goku which I'm iffy about - but then, the sequel's not been updated in years so *shrugs* The original fic is complete, though. Link: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/3055378/1/Keeping-Face

tag.0's Mine is Sanzo/Hakkai, and I enjoy it for the demon-pack-building mythos it's got going. Pretty short but a fun read. It's mostly focused on the pairing, though, so I don't know if it'd be your cup of tea. Link: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/5997343/1/Mine

And Vathara's Entanglements is hands down my favourite Saiyuki fic ever - and it's Sanzo/Hakkai, so, bonus! Even if you're ambivalent about the pairing, I think the plot's pretty cool, so it's definitely worth a read. It's more "cool plot with pairing on the side" than anything else =D Link: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/4956711/1/Entanglements

Totally agreed. They love each other, but it is a familial type of love. Sanzo's basically his older brother whose stuck in a father figure-ish role if that makes any sense. Tell me about it. I was looking for some nice, slightly fluffy Sanzo and Goku family bonding fic but all I could find was romance.

Goku just acts so damn young and fits into a younger brother role to the rest of the gang. So, I can't ship him with Hakkai or Gojyo because they basically read as older brothers to Goku to me. I kinda ship him with Lirin tbh. They're adorable together, not gonna lie.

Agreed so hard on that. While they click and work together as friends, I can't see them romantically involved. It just wouldn't work.

If you're ever interested in writing that essay, I'd totally read it. And omg, from that description alone, I kinda want to ship them together. It hits quite a few buttons of mine.

Thank you for the recs! I'm currently reading tag.0 's Mine and I'm enjoying it so far. :)

What are some of your other ships?

(Anonymous) 2014-09-02 10:06 am (UTC)(link)
Lirin and Nataku are the only people in the series I can ship Goku with. Anyone else just does not work!

Heheh I don't know if I'd ever write that essay, but we'll see! It kind of gets summed up as: I think they have complementary neuroses; they'd end up helping each other rather than exacerbating the problems. Which is sort of my problem with ships like Gojyo/Hakkai or Sanzo/Gojyo - I don't think they'd be healthy for each other.

Ooh, come over to the Sanzo/Hakkai side! I have to admit, it's that particular interpretation of them that I think works - I've read a few shippy fics where their interactions just don't work for me, which is almost more of a disappointment than not finding fic at all. I really like the fact that Sanzo and Hakkai are both the sort who'd like to vanish to the library, given half a chance, and I like to imagine them sitting around having philosophical discussions when they're bored and the kids *cough Gojyo and Goku cough* are out to play. =D

As far as ships go, I usually have one OTP per fandom, but I bounce through multiple fandoms. SanzoHakkai and ZoroLuffy you already know... I guess the other anime/manga-centric ones I love are Tezuka/Ryoma from Prince of Tennis, Conrad/Yuuri from Kyou Kara Maou!, and Kakashi/Naruto from, well, Naruto. With fandoms like Harry Potter, or Bleach, I generally have a favourite character (Harry and Ichigo respectively) and I'll read pretty much anything that's centred on them and has a good plot - there are a few ships I don't read (like Harry/Draco), and other than those I'll read anything. What about you?

(Anonymous) 2014-09-02 11:47 am (UTC)(link)
I barely remember Nataku. I think it's time for a Saiyuki reread!

Like I said, I'd totally read it if you do. I've never really read a shipping manifesto before tbh. Never had the urge and I doubt there's any for most of my ships.

And it is an interpretation that I can get behind. Can completely understand that. Some ships just have to be written a certain way for them to work. I think it would be more of a disappoinment. Like suddenly finding a fic for a rarepair and being all happy. Then settling down and getting into only to find that every character is just horribly ooc. I try not to be picky and take what I can get but damn there's only so much ooc bullshit I can put up with.

Ohhhh yes. I can totally imagine them hanging out and complaining about the kids a bit as well. Sometimes they seek out each other just to have someone a bit more mature to talk to. I'm warming up to this ship.

I usually have one or two characters that I latch onto and proceeed to ship them with damn near everybody I can imagine. Though theres usually one pairing with those characters that is my absolute favorite. For example in Naruto those characters are Gai and Rock Lee. I ship them with damn near everyone in this series but I can't ship them together for much the same reason I can't ship Goku/Sanzo. Gai/Kakashi and Lee/Neji are my absolute faves.

For Bleach, it's Orihime and Juushiro. It's a tossup between Orihime/Byakuya and Orihime/Rukia for my fave Orihime pairing. While it's probably Juushiro/Byakuya or Juushiro/Shunsui for Juushiro.

Another one is Kuwabara from Yuu Yuu Hakusho. And for him, it's probably Kuwabara/Kurama. With Hiei/Kuwabara for a close second.

I've got more and I've not even named my ships for my main fandom but I'm getting tired. If I did name it right now, I would just end up gushing my main OTP like crazy and not get any sleep at all today. Maybe later.

I'm going by what I've been told about One Piece shipping, pretty much. I haven't actually looked for anything for any pairs. I'm only up to Water Seven in the manga. (Well, a bit for Vivi/Kohza, which hits certain shipping tendencies of mine, but I hadn't really expected to find anything.)

I'm actually wondering what the OP is basing the interpretation of homophobia on, because without context, it reads to me as "not liking my m/m pairs=homophobic," which I've seen a lot of over the years. (Not saying that is the case here, just that it reads as such to me without further context.)

Ahh, okay. Afaik, it's really Zoro/Sanji that's the big pairing amongst Luffy's crew. There's some decent Zoro/Luffy out there, but it's a much smaller part of fandom =(

Hah, I can see where you'd get that impression, from the way the secret's phrased! I can sympathise with OP, though, because I know people in RL who're fans of certain manga, but also very homophobic. They're people I feel uncomfortable discussing the manga with at all (I pretend I'm not a fan, or only a casual one, sometimes) because I'm afraid my love for my OTPs will bleed through, and then they'll attack me over them - and I'm very bad with confrontations!
