Brit here. always wanted to know:
what is labour day? what does it celebrate / note?
And why does it have a negative relationship to the colour white?

It's like May Day in the rest of the world, except we didn't want to make it on May Day officially like the rest of the world because we were terrified of communists, so we made it in September instead.

Also, the relationship to white is because it's sort of the official marker for the end of summer and the beginning of fall and winter. So you stop wearing your light, light-colored summer clothes.

May day is a celebration of the return of life and beginning of summer. It's rooted in the old religions of Europe. What does it have to do with Communism??? I think there must be another connection here that I've missed?

"Labor Day in the United States is a holiday celebrated on the first Monday in September. It is a celebration of the American labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of their country."

Basically supposed to celebrate workers. Most government jobs take off (post office and such). School also usually takes the day off. Not really any celebrations.

In regards to white.
The wives of the super-rich ruled high society with an iron fist after the Civil War. As more and more people became millionaires, though, it was difficult to tell the difference between old money, respectable families, and those who only had vulgar new money. By the 1880s, in order to tell who was acceptable and who wasn’t, the women who were already “in” felt it necessary to create dozens of fashion rules that everyone in the know had to follow. That way, if a woman showed up at the opera in a dress that cost more than most Americans made in a year, but it had the wrong sleeve length, other women would know not to give her the time of day.

Not wearing white outside the summer months was another one of these silly rules. White was for weddings and resort wear, not dinner parties in the fall. Of course it could get extremely hot in September, and wearing white might make the most sense, but if you wanted to be appropriately attired you just did not do it. Labor Day became a federal holiday in 1894, and society eventually adopted it as the natural endpoint for summer fashion.

Labor Day is the marking of Autumn. White is seen as a Spring and Summer color. Traditionally, you don't wear those colors in Autumn. So, wearing a white after that start of Autumn is as a fashion faux pas.

Which always puzzled me, because the autumnal equinox isn't until 22 Sept or so.

Those are all questions you could've typed into Google, at any time.
