Some fandoms definitely have a better quality of fic. More experienced writers will generally produce better stuff.

It's not just the age of the fandom that determines it, more the demographic of the fans in it.

I haven't even seen all the source material for all of the fandoms I read in, but I don't find it matters for the longer, plotty fics.

I've just observed that older fans have generally had more time to practice and thus the quality tends to be a bit higher. Not a hard and fast rule by any means, but it's been my experience.
