I agree with your overall point, but I do think that Xander gets backlash for his behavior, especially in later seasons. (Perhaps not enough, true.) He's not a Slayer or witch or demon - he has normal flaws and screws himself over in normal ways. His relationship with Anya and his absolutely abhorrent behavior towards her after "Hell's Bells" show her visibly suffering more, but he's the one that's the ultimate failure. The only reason the show doesn't judge him harshly enough for his actions in that situation is because it was Spike that slept with Anya, so we're supposed to feel betrayed on behalf of almost everyone.

I'm running on about 2 hours of sleep, so that might not make any sense. But basically, I think Xander is supposed to be the most normal and relatable one of the cast, especially as the seasons continue. The show can serve up just desserts to someone misusing magic, but for being an asshole to an ex? That's something most people do, whether it's justified or not. They were bound to go easier on him.

That said, from what I can tell, the comics absolutely destroy his character (and several others), mostly by making him this intrinsically wise and moral person. Um, no.

What are these 'comics' you talk about? They don't exist in my reality.
