The lack of acknowledgement of this irks the majority of fandom, including me.

But to play Devil's advocate, Angelus had killed Jenny, seriously injured Willow and was trying to end the world. Xander was justifiably furious. I can't say the writers were being too nice to him for 7 seasons based on one moment that is truly asshole-ish but also understandable.

It's impossible for me to read it that way, in the light of Xander's constant railing against Angel even before he turned, simply because Buffy was more attracted to him, and in the light of his general personality. It's always come off to me as motivated more by personal dislike than by a serious moral conviction that this is what Angel deserved. And I can't respect that, especially given that the mechanism he chose was straight-up lying to his friend.

I 100% agree.

It wasn't moral conviction at all. Xander dated and almost married a former vengeance demon but constantly gave Buffy shit for who she dated (unless he approved of her choice, like with Riley). He was an hypocrital shithead.

He really was. Even when they did acknowledge the lie in season seven, he said he wanted Buffy to give Anya a slide because they were friends and he loved her. Angel may not have really been as close with the Scoobies as Anya but Buffy loved him and she railed Xander for that and I fucking cheered.

Lemme guess. Spike fans. Winners in the hypocrisy stakes
