As a fellow Martha lover, I'm on the fence about your not needing the Doctor. I think it was a moment for her to realize "I can do bad all by myself, thank you". Sometimes you need that push, or that drag through the mud to realize what you're really made of. I think Martha's experience helped her see that--after all she realized she is good, and she doesn't need anyone's approval--which was something I think she kind of desired while she was with the Doctor.

Arguably, she didn't NEED him (as you say she wasn't stuck, etc.) but I would argue it was a good thing for her to have been with him. She now knows that she could handle anything that is thrown her way--whereas before maybe she thought that--now she knows it for sure. Being with him definitely helped shape her.

BTW, if you could describe some character traits you feel she had before meeting the doctor/that came out while with the doc, I'd appreciate it (writing a fic where he's never been in the picture)!
