Re: Happy Labor Day!

If you'd like to read a recent story about labor in the US, take a look at the Market Basket saga.

Market Basket is a supermarket chain in New England known for its good customer service, low prices, and way they treat their employees - they have benefits, pensions, and better pay than comparable stores, largely in part to the CEO, Arthur T. Demoulas. There's been a power struggle since the company hired outside consultants to help with the company (okay, there's been a power struggle within the Demoulas family for generations, mainly between Arthur T. and Arthur S, but that's another story). In July, the board of directors ousted Arthur T. In response, almost all the employees stopped working. Truck drivers wouldn't deliver food, stockers wouldn't stock the shelves, cashiers didn't show up, managers put up signs in support of Arthur T. and encouraged people to shop elsewhere. In the meantime, employees held rallies and protests to get Arthur T. rehired.

Customers, in part, boycotted Market Basket, going to other stores in support of the stores' employees and Arthur T. Admin was furious - some high-level supporters of Arthur T. were fired and part-time employees basically had their hours cut to zero, so they were making no money. Stores were empty of food and customers. Market Basket did a few hiring events, but few people showed up (probably due in part to supporting existing employees and not wanting to cross the line.) Note, all this was done without a union.

There were rumors of multiple groups bidding for control of Market Basket, mainly Hannaford (another supermarket chain) and Arthur T. Last week, Arthur T. bought the majority shares from Arthur S. for $1.5 billion, and the stores started operating again immediately.

I have no idea how Market Basket will bounce back as a company - they lost millions to lost revenue - but it's an unprecedented event.
