I remember one fic I read a long long time ago where the author updated regularly and the last chapter they posted worked almost as final chapter but with a couple small loose ends. The author wrote that they had one more chapter planned and that the final chapter was actually even finished but they wanted to wait a week or so to post it...and then the fic never updated again. They didn't have any other fics and I never was able to find any other online presence and eventually the fic itself was deleted in ff.net's great NC-17 purge (hey, I said it was a long time ago). I've always kinda wondered if something bad happened to them. Especially since they said the last chapter was done, I'd think even if you lost interest in the fic or something you'd either just post it or delete the whole thing.
