I've lost the ability to suspend disbelief for generally first love, teenaged romance tropes in characters in their 40s and up unless there is a very good reason and some very good writing behind it all.

Oh, holy shit, yes. In my fandom, there's a character who was previously married, so he's obviously experienced in the relationship department. But some people write him like he's never known love before and OMG IT'S SO AMAZING WOW, and it drives me bonkers. Even if he hadn't ever known love before, he's a grown man; he doesn't act like he's 13 in canon, and he wouldn't act like he's 13 in real life.

You and me both, anon. I have to wonder if we (as in myself and the writers who do this sort of thing) are consuming the same works or not sometimes.
