Who are your favourite childless/childfree characters that kick ass?

[personal profile] kallanda_lee 2014-09-02 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Sort of inspired by yesterday's wank, but I'm generally always interested in good characters that don't have the baby rabies...

Buffy. Donna Noble.

Various super hero characters but I think whether or not they have a child depends on what canon you are going by.

Maybe only slightly off topic, but the whole BUT MUH FAMILY trope that pops up so often in entertainment media is the reason I love playing Resident Evil and Call of Duty so much.

With a very few notable exceptions, basically all of my favorite kickass characters are child-free by default, since their family lives are never mentioned. You can just assume they're single or gay or whatever you like because there is literally never any circumstance in which the narrative tells you otherwise.

So good.

And yeah, that means a lack of female characters in CoD, but it sure doesn't in RE!

I've noticed games tend to be better for it than TV or film for some reason.

...Better or agonizingly worse. There's no middle ground.

It's either extreme sap and children/family shoehorned in for drama and instant feeeelings or no mention of anything to do with interpersonal relationships whatsoever (because it would get in the way of the message or take too much time away from the shooting).

...Uhhhhhhhh, you know, this is harder than I thought. (Was looking at my list of icons and kept finding characters with children.)

Most the Mass Effect cast? (Er....shit, a decent amount of them have children too.) ...Most the Dragon Age cast?

Yea, I'm too lazy to put all of them down, but there are a fair few in BioWare games!

Yeah, like I said in another reply I think games are better for it. Though with bioware some is implied, like if you'd romance Alistair in canon you know you'd be making royal babies.

Actually wardens have a harder time having children. It isn't impossible, but two wardens trying to conceive probably would run into a lot of trouble... Not sure it would work.

A lot of my favourite characters could qualify, but mostly because they're young or the circumstances to have children haven't cropped up yet(like pretty much all the MCU characters). So I'm not sure if they count?

(I'd like to say Robin from HIMYM but that show never really treated her lack of wanting kids as a good thing, idk, but I loved her best).

Same here, but I'll add that a lot of my favourites are also AI, aliens, angels, or other beings that are basically sexless. Not that this is always proof against having or wanting children, but it's an element.

I've got some aliens on that list too, and heck with some of them they might have kids it's just never brought up.

Yea, I was thinking that too, so I just left those out. (Teen Wolf cast for instance, LOL. Then I've been watching anime lately, but the vast majority of the casts are full of teens in high school...so, you know, that doesn't really count either.)

As far as the MCU goes I think the only ones that could probably count are Tony and Pepper? Rhodey too now that I think about it.

But yeah, mostly it's just a happenstance that they don't have them.

Well.

It used to be Bones, but we see how that turned out.

That show sort of became BABIES EVERYWHERE without warning.

The first thing I thought of was the characters in The Expendables movies, because the last one specifically addresses the issue of children in a scene where the leader of the group talks to one of the new recruits.

I think the scene went like this:

Barney (Sly Stallone): You know, if you're thinking of going the family route, this isn't the best job for you.
Lara (Ronda Rousey): *unimpressed look* There are different kinds of family.
*pause*
You know what I'm talking about.

And the whole point of the film (as much as you can say the film has a point) is how their group itself is a family that looks after each other and that's all the family they need.

Baby rabies? I don't get it, seems like there would be tons of badass characters who don't have kids. Most, even.

True, but a lot of them are young and I guess they should still come up? I guess I should have specified in a sense I mean more mature characters, that could have/want them, but don't.

I didn't necessarily see it as a bad way of phrasing it, but I'll refrain from it of it offends.

I mean "baby rabies", though I've never heard that one before, kinda feels like it's in the same category as "crotch droppings". I get that you don't want to be ridiculed for being childfree, and you are 100% justified in that, but ridiculing people who choose to have children or who really want children - even if it's indirect - isn't really cool, either. (In short - why can't we all just get along?)

I'm sure you don't actually think this way about people who want to have kids. I'm sorry if my reaction is/was extreme.
